Tanning Is a Science – Not Just Sunshine

Artificial tanning (via tanning beds combined with sunless tanners) uses a controlled UVA/UVB ratio to maximize melanin production safely and evenly, without overexposing your skin to harmful UVB rays. Before & After Tanning – What You Need to Know

Before Tanning – Dos:

• Shave body hair 2–3 days prior
• Gently exfoliate 1–2 days before (avoid oily scrubs)
  → This ensures even application and prevents patchy fading due to dead skin buildup.

Before Tanning – Don’ts:

• Avoid laser treatments, chemical peels, oral isotretinoin (Accutane), or exfoliating acids
  → These can weaken the skin and increase sensitivity.

After Tanning – Dos:

1. Keep skin hydrated — moisture loss increases after tanning
2. Use color-locking or tan-extending products for long-lasting results
3. Apply SPF diligently to avoid further UV damage
4. Allow DHA-based self-tanners to fully dry; avoid water contact during development time

After Tanning – Don’ts:

• No hot springs, saunas, or steam rooms
• Avoid exfoliants or resurfacing acids for a few days

Pro Tip: DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), the active ingredient in most self-tanners, reacts with amino acids in the outer skin layer to produce color. It takes several hours to fully develop—so be patient, avoid water, and let the magic happen.
